July 2005
Signs of Spring! It seems a long time since seven Skylarks and four helpers donned wellies and raincoats, and with magnifying glasses in hand, set out to visit Northfield Woods, Onehouse for a Springtime nature walk.
With assistance from the helpers they completed tasks some of which required them to listen for birdsong, look for catkins and wild flowers and to spot any other signs of wildlife, including lifting a log to see what was living underneath. There was great excitement when our youngest, and newest, Skylark was first to see a bumble bee which hadn't been expected due to the inclement weather. The overall favourite seemed to be two frogs which were seen escaping into the undergrowth.
Finally our happy group returned to the Parish Room for welcome refreshments and to do observational drawings of some of the flowers and plants seen on their walk, and a word search with a 'Spring' flavour!
February 2005
The theme for our last Skylarks was Insects and Beetles. We made a caterpillar bookmark with Derek, and Carole helped us decorate some chocolate biscuits to make beetle biscuits. We had a go at a wordsearch, which Robert managed to finish before we went home. We sang a song about a butterfly, and lots of other animals which weren't insects. We ended by playing beetle and this was won by Anna.
Autumn 2004
The first session of last term had ‘Autumn’ as the theme. The children made pictures from fallen leaves and they produces and wore bracelets made out of Hips, Hornbeam seed heads and autumn coloured beads (very fetching they were too). We also made apple crumbles that the children took home to eat. One of our male helpers had a bad case of the sulks at this point, we understand that he is rather partial to apple crumble and we didn’t make any spares!
Our second meeting was on the theme of ‘Newspapers’. Amongst other things the children were taught how to make palm trees and ladders out of rolled up newspapers (two well known party pieces of old), we also did very messy potato printing and had songs led by one of our guitar playing helpers - a good time had by all.
