November 2005
After the wind and rain if the previous day, Saturday 17th September was bright and sunny, if a little chilly! With one large and several small gazebos our Garden Party / Fete was a happy and successful event.
We were pleased to welcome Peggy Cole who opened the Fete and encouraged everyone to support the many competitions, stalls, etc., which they did before enjoying a ‘naughty but nice’ cream tea.
A large raffle was well supported and at the end of the day the Club benefited by £400.
Thanks are due to the Committee for setting up and manning the stalls, games, etc. and also the extra helpers who were much appreciated and, of course, to everyone who supported us on the day and we hope you all enjoyed yourselves.
Following the Club 41st Birthday Party we shall met in the Church Room, Onehouse at 2.00pm on Tuesday, 8th November, when we welcome the ‘Pearly King’. We are making this an Open Meeting and visitors will be most welcome to join us for 50p which includes a cup of tea and light refreshments.
Unfortunately, our Chairman was unwell and unable to join us for the Club Birthday Party. Numbers were down for a variety of reasons, but we were joined by three members of the Candlestick Club. Those able to be present were entertained by the Revd Robinson, a retired Methodist Minister from Thorpe-le-Soken, on his electric accordion. He played numerous songs from the 1950’s and soon had his audience singing along. Between songs he had members laughing at tales of his childhood which brought back memories to those present. Also tales of ‘Fred’.
A delicious buffet was provided by the Committee and, after the entertainment, a selection of cakes were enjoyed with a glass of sherry. The evening ended with a raffle and the presentation of presents to members who had had a birthday since the last meeting.
The competition for the November meeting will be something ‘pearly’.
October 2005
Our last outing of the year was one of the best days of the Summer when we travelled to Waldringfield for a trip on the river. From the coach we made our way to the 'Jahan' and, with the help of the efficient staff we were all able to board the boat. The Captain gave a running commentary as we travelled past Ramsholt. Unfortunately, we were unable to go to Woodbridge Tide Mill as the tide was wrong.
Once settled on our way we were served with a glass of sherry or soft drink and, a little later, with a very appetising ploughman's lunch. On the return journey we were able to purchase tea, coffee, fruit juice or beer and picture cards as souvenirs.
On arrival back at the boat-yard were enjoyed a short rest in the sunshine, enjoying an ice-cream.
A pleasant journey home through the Suffolk countryside ended a most enjoyable day.
Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, 11th October and will be the Club's 41st Birthday. We shall meet in the Church Room, Onehouse.
September 2005
Numbers for our July meeting were very low, but those who did join us had a very enjoyable day. The ride through the back ways of Norfolk was very pleasant and we arrived at Gressenhall around 11.30am, where we were greeted by a guide who gave us a brief explanation of what there was to see.
The first stop for most of us was the restaurant where we were quickly served with delicious refreshments. Revived, e made our various ways. The main building was the old ‘workhouse’ but now houses tableaux and photographs of the past. On the first floor there is a collection of memorabilia. Outside there is a chapel, schoolroom, village shop and cottage, just as they were years ago. Many of the party made there way to the farm to see the collection of rare, and not so rare, animals.
Before joining the coach for the return journey a cup of tea was enjoyed and a look round the shop for the odd purchase or two!
On August 4th we enjoyed a half day trip to Euston Hall. The weather was very pleasant and enabled those who wished to, to visit the attractive small church in the grounds. We also enjoyed the exhibition room and the craft shop and, of course, the refreshment room.
………………………………
By the time you read this, our outings will be over for the year and we will be busy preparing for our Garden Party / Fete at Green Farmhouse on Shelland Green, on Saturday 17th September. To be opened by Peggy Cole
This is in place of our usual Bazaar in the Community Centre and we look forward to an enjoyable afternoon.
Stalls – Sideshows – Cream Teas – Competitions
Hopefully Sunshine!!!
Everyone very welcome – Hope to see you there!
July 2005
Tuesday, 14th June, saw us on our way to North Norfolk. Although we didn't see much of the sun, the weather was fine and ideal for a coach trip.
Our first stop was at Swaffham, where most people enjoyed a coffee before making our way to Holt for a look around the excellent shops and a light lunch before getting the steam train to Sheringham. The smell of the smoke brought back many memories.
Once in Sheringham, the majority enjoyed their fish and chips. A few had a walk to the sea before joining the coach for the homeward journey.
Our next outing is on July 12th to 'Roots' of Gressenhall and then on Thursday August 4th we have an afternoon trip to Euston Hall. There are spare seats for both trips for anyone who would like to join us.
June 2005
Our first outing of the year was a Mystery Tour. Before leaving home there were a few showers, but once we were on the road the day was very pleasant as we travelled through the beautiful Suffolk/Essex countryside - Sudbury - Castle Hedingham -Braintree - arriving right on time for lunch at Timbed' Blake End.
After a meal enjoyed by all, we had time to look around the complex of interesting small shops before leaving for home.
Our driver took a different route on the return journey, taking us through villages most of us had not been to before. On the way we stopped to draw the raffle and hand out birthday presents to those members who had celebrated their birthdays since the last meeting.
The day of our outing happened to be the Chairman's birthday and during our stop she handed round cartons of soft drinks and a selection of biscuits to celebrate!
Our next trip, on Tuesday, 14th June, is to North Norfolk and a trip on the Holt to Sheringham Steam Railway. We shall have a few spare seats if anyone would like to join us.r
May 2005
On Tuesday, April 12th, we held our AGM in the Church Room, Onehouse.
The Secretary read the minutes of the 2004 AGM and the Chairman gave a report on the meetings and outings of the past year.
A copy of the 2004/05 Accounts was given to each member.
The business part of the meeting was followed by a talk by a member of Age Concern, Suffolk, who gave a full report on the help available. She also brought a large selection of leaflets giving details of how and where to apply for services and assistance.
The competition for a 'garden-on-a-plate' had only one entry, a very attractive and sure winner, how ever many entries there may have been! Then, at the close of the meeting, a gentleman member brought in his entry, a most attractive arrangement of small plants. These two entries made other members feel very guilty for not 'having a go'!
The meeting ended with refreshments provided by the Committee.
March 2005
At the start of the March meeting members observed a minutes silence in memory of two members, Mrs Ruby Keable and Mrs Audrey Stiff who had passed away in the last fortnight. Mrs Stiff was a founder Committee member who had always worked hard for the Club until the last few years of her life. Mrs Keable had been a Club member for many years and had always enjoyed the monthly meetings and outings. We shall miss them both.
Lynton Clements from Stowmarket brought along a selection of slides of how Stowmarket looked in the past. It is surprising how soon we forget what the town looked like only a few years ago.
These were followed by a selection of slides of the Suffolk / Norfolk coastline erosion. A further set were of a 'Scarecrow' festival.
The Easter Card Competition was judged by Mrs Jean Howe. Refreshments were made and served by the Committee. The raffle and presentation of birthday presents ended the meeting.
The next meeting will be the AGM on Tuesday, 12th April, at 2.00pm in the Church Room, when the competition will be a garden on a plate.r
January 2005
For the first meeting of 2005 the Chairman brought along some tapes she had prepared, hoping to get the members dancing!
Unfortunately, for various reasons, several members were unable to make the meeting, but those present did enjoy the music and a few brave ones enjoyed a dance!
A quiz and an excellent tea, including Christmas Cake, was followed by a little more music and a glass of sherry. The competition for the best hyacinth was won by Mrs Joan Brodie.
There will be no meeting in February, but we met again on Tuesday, March 8th at 2.00pm in the Church Room, Onehouse. The competition - a home made Easter Card.
2004
Our last outing of the year was to Southwold. On the morning of the 24th August we awoke to the sound of rain and after reading in the paper that there had been a typhoon in Southwold the night before, we expected the worse. However by the time we embarked on the coach the weather was much improved and we had a very pleasant journey.
After dropping off the shoppers in the town the remainders were taken to the pier area where after a welcome drink we had a walk along the pier stopping to admire the waters clock and watch it perform.
An excellent meal was enjoyed in the pier restaurant after which we made the most of a in the sun.
Unfortunately, one of our party missed her footing coming out of the toilets and cut her head. An ambulance took her to a doctor where she was attended to and returned to the coach in time to join us for the journey home.
We were not so lucky with the weather the previous week when our Chairman invited member to a garden party at his home. The morning was fine and dry and everything was set up for tea in the garden, but just as everyone arrived the rain came and continued for the rest of the afternoon. However we all moved indoors and had a very enjoyable afternoon. A well stocked bring and buy stall and a raffle were well supported and an excellent tea provided by the comities was done full justice to.
On Tuesday October 12th we celebrate the Clubs 40th anniversary with a sit down meal in the Church Room Onehouse (hopefully the workman will leave finished). Starting at 6.00pm the meal will be followed by entertainment. It is hoped that as many members as possible will be able to attend.
